Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do you provide transfers from Port Douglas accommodation?
A. All of our packages include courtesy transfers to and from your accommodation on your day of travel. If you are departing from Cairns, we can also provide transfers to and from the Domestic and International Terminal of the Cairns Airport. Our pickups and drop off cover the Cairns metropolitan area, extending to the Northern beaches and Palm Cove.

Q. What do I need to bring when I go to the Great Barrier Reef?
A. Dress for the tropics and bring a hat, sunglasses, a towel and sunscreen. There are lots to see so a camera is recommended and bring some cash or credit cards for drinks and souvenirs, in most cases lockers are available for individual use. Options on board the pontoon include Scuba diving and guided Snorkelling tours.

Q. Are there any extra costs?
A. The environmental tax is included in your rate when you are on a Reef Tour Package. The prices do not include optional tours such as Scuba Diving, Ocean Walkers or guided snorkelling tours.

Q. Can we take photographs from within the helicopters?
A. All helicopters have clear windows which enable you to take some incredible photographs of the reef and rainforest. Some of the helicopters have windows which can be opened for photography as well; all we ask is that when taking pictures no part of the body or camera are placed outside of the helicopter, and straps should not be placed around the neck for safety reasons.

Q. Why are weights so important on a helicopter?
A. Weights play an important role in helicopters. We need to ensure that our helicopters on all flights are not over loaded under the Civil Aviation Safety Authority regulations. For this reason we need you to provide accurate weights when booking. There is no need to be concerned as your weights are kept strictly confidential and you will also be weighed on arrival, including your luggage.

Q. What type of helicopters do you have?
A. We have a fleet of Bell 206B Jetrangers, Bell 206L Longrangers, Eurocopter AS350B (more affectionately known as Squirrels) and a Robinson 44.

Q. How do I know which boat to get onto when coming back to Port Douglas?
A. When flying to the reef and coming back with a cruise company, all pontoons will only have one boat departing from the pontoon, and returning to the mainland.

Q. What happens if the weather is bad?
A. If at the time of departure, the pilots deem that the flight cannot go ahead due to bad weather conditions and thus raising safety concerns, the flight will be cancelled. If this occurs we will make every endeavour to place you on an alternate flight that will meet your requirements. If this is not possible a full refund will be offered.

Q. What happens if I need to cancel?
A. If you cancel 24 hours or more before the time of travel there is no penalty, however if you cancel within 24 hours of the booking you will be charged for the full amount.

Q. Can I dive and fly in a helicopter on the same day?
A. Yes you can. If you wish to do an introductory dive then you must Cruise / Fly as you will receive your dive briefing on your way out to the Reef site onboard Quicksilver Cruises staff. If you are a certified diver, then you must Fly / Cruise to ensure you stay within dive and fly regulations. Due to time restraints there is a maximum of one dive per person.
